Copyright is the mechanism for protecting “original works of authorship” in a fixed form. Basically, if the original work is painted, sculpted, written, recorded, videoed or put in some other fixed form, it can be protected through copyrighting the work with the US Copyright Office.
An idea cannot be copyrighted. Please see Blog on this site on this issue. An idea is not an original work of authorship, even if you write it down. It is merely an idea that has yet to come to fruition.
The ownership of copyrights can be licensed or transferred, and they can even be divided by a court in a divorce
